JOSÉ LENCASTRE
José Lencastre é um saxofonista, improvisador,e compositor de Lisboa.
Reconhecido músico versátil, tem tocado vários géneros musicais ao longo dos anos. A partir de 2005 entra em contacto com o vibrante movimento da música improvisada nacional e desde logo passa a fazer parte do seu circuito de concertos e sessões, tocando com a grande maioria dos músicos lisboetas e também com artistas internacionais de várias partes do mundo.
Entre 2012 e 2016 viveu no Brasil, onde teve a oportunidade de desenvolver o seu interesse pela vasta e rica cultura rítmica, melódica e harmónica de diferentes tradições, tais como o Choro, o Frevo, a Ciranda, etc.
Durante a sua estadia em Pernambuco criou o grupo Inconsciente Colectivo, um trio de sax, teclas, e bateria, que tocava sobretudo composições originais.
De volta a Portugal, forma o Nau Quartet com Rodrigo Pinheiro, Hernâni Faustino, e João Lencastre.
Este grupo tem quatro discos editados até à data, todos eles muito bem recebidos pela crítica e pelo público, tanto em Portugal como fora.
Em Novembro de 2019 é editado pela Clean Feed, “ Live in Moscow “ - registo de um dos concertos da tour que o grupo fez na Rússia no ano anterior.
Tem tido a oportunidade de se apresentar ao vivo em vários países, tais como França, Alemanha, Inglaterra, Eslovénia, Sérvia, Rússia, Polónia, República Checa, Eslováquia, Hungria, Marrocos, e Espanha.
Desde 2017, tem ido várias vezes à Holanda, e fruto desse encontro com músicos da cena free e improv de Amesterdão lançou juntamente com Raoul van Der Weide e Onno Govaert o album Spirit in Spirit - Live at Zaal 100. Um outro grupo fruto destas viagens é o trio com Miguel Petruccelli e Aleksandar Škorić.
Em 2020 lançou Anthropic Neglect com Jorge Nuno, Felipe Zenícola e João Valinho. Este grupo tocou no ano seguinte no festival Jazz em Agosto, para uma lotação esgotada no Grande Auditório da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian.
Juntamente com outros amigos músicos fundou a editora Phonogram Unit e participou na primeira edição discográfica deste selo: Vento, onde toca em trio com Hernâni Faustino e Vasco Furtado.
Em Setembro de 2021 é lançado pela PU o album “Thoughts are Things” onde o Nau Quartet convida Pedro Carneiro.

José Lencastre is a creative improviser, composer and saxophonist from Lisbon, Portugal.
He’s known for his versatility in playing different musical genres over the years and has been a part of the vibrant Portuguese improvised scene since around 2005 sharing the stage and recording with most of the local musicians as well as collaborating with international performing artists from all over the world.
Between 2012 and 2016 he lived in Brasil where he developed his interest in the rich rhythmic, melodic and harmonic musical culture of Choro, Frevo, Ciranda, etc. While in Pernambuco he put together Inconsciente Coletivo, a trio of sax, keyboard and drums that played mostly his own compositions.
Back to Lisbon, together with Rodrigo Pinheiro, Hernâni Faustino and João Lencastre, José formed Nau Quartet.
The group has released four records so far that have been highly acclaimed both in Portugal and abroad. "Live in Moscow" , came out on Clean Feed and captures a magic night at DOM Cultural Center , during a tour in Russia in 2018.
In the recent album "Thoughts are Things", Marimba master Pedro Carneiro was invited as special guest, adding color and texture to the quartet's sound.
He has also participated in several other albums as a leader or co-leader that have been reviewed in prestigious magazines, newspapers or websites such as Jazz.pt, All About Jazz, Free Jazz Blog, Salt Peanuts, NYC Jazz Records, Ipsilon, just to name a few.
Lencastre has toured in different countries such as France, Germany, England, Slovenia, Serbia, Russia, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Morocco and Spain.
He has been playing with some Amsterdam based musicians since 2017. A collaborative trio with Raoul van der Weide and Onno Govaert released the album Spirit in Spirit - Live at Zaal 100 on British label FMR Records in 2019. Another trio, this one with Miguel Petruccelli and Aleksandar Škorić is also a collaboration that came out of that contact with the dutch free music culture.
Anthropic Neglect, a collective project with Jorge Nuno, Felipe Zenícola, and João Valinho released its debut self titled album in 2020. In the following year they played for a full house at Gulbenkian Jazz em Agosto.
José Lencastre is co-founder of the label Phonogram Unit. This project was born during the 2020 pandemic and it aims to release free and contemporary music from the musicians that are part of it.
